Floor Polishing

Fine floor sanding and polishing smooths out the surface after coarse sanding and is critical for a professional finish. Polishing prepares the wood grain for coating.

Professional Floor Sanding & Polishing

Floor sanding is the foundation of a quality timber floor restoration. Achieving a smooth, even and professional finish requires the right skills, experience and equipment. Incorrect sanding techniques or unsuitable machinery can permanently damage timber flooring and result in uneven surfaces, sanding marks, exposed joints or unnecessary timber removal.

At Island Floor Finishing, Matthew draws on more than 25 years of hands-on flooring experience to professionally sand, repair and refinish timber floors. We use modern, dust-controlled floor sanding machinery and quality finishing systems to achieve a clean, consistent result while helping protect your existing timber floor.

While DIY floor sanding and rental equipment may appear to be a cost-effective option, achieving a professional result requires considerably more than simply operating a floor sander. Timber species, floor condition, previous coatings, sanding sequences, edge work, repairs and finishing products all need to be carefully considered.

If you are considering restoring your timber floors, choose the experience and equipment of a professional floor sanding specialist.

Timber Floor Sanding & Polishing

Timber floor sanding and polishing is a more involved process than simply applying a new coating. When restoring older timber floors throughout the Northern Rivers region of NSW, the floor may first require repairs and preparation, including board replacement, punching and filling exposed nails, addressing damaged sections and flattening high spots before progressively sanding the surface.

Achieving a professional result requires the right equipment, knowledge and practical experience. Each timber floor presents different challenges, and the sanding process needs to be tailored to the condition, timber species and existing finish. With more than 25 years of flooring experience, Matthew has the skills and equipment required to repair, sand and refinish timber floors and decking to a high professional standard.

The Professional Difference

Many older homes throughout the Northern Rivers region feature original pine or hardwood timber floors that can become worn, damaged or uneven over time. While replacement or covering the existing floor may seem like the solution, these options can involve significant preparation and installation costs.

In many cases, professionally repairing, sanding and refinishing the existing timber floor is a more cost-effective alternative. An experienced floor sander can repair damaged boards, correct imperfections, remove old coatings and apply a new professional finish.

Before replacing your timber floor, consider whether it can be restored. With the right skills, equipment and experience, an old timber floor can often be transformed into a beautiful feature of your home. Contact Matt to discuss your floor sanding or restoration project.

Can All floors be floor sanded?

Floor sanding and resurfacing is suitable for solid timber and engineered hardwood floors with sufficient timber wear layer remaining above the tongue and groove. The suitability of engineered flooring should be assessed before sanding to determine whether adequate timber remains.

Timber floors and finishes naturally change colour and wear over time. Attempting to stain or resurface only a small damaged area to match an existing finish will often result in a visible patch or colour variation. For the most consistent appearance, sanding and resurfacing the entire floor area is generally recommended.

In some situations, sanding and polishing a single room is possible, particularly where a wall, doorway or other natural transition separates it from adjoining areas.

For advice on the most suitable approach for your timber flooring, contact Matt at Island Floor Finishing. With more than 25 years of flooring experience, Matt can assess your floor and recommend a practical solution for achieving a professional, even finish.

Laminate and vinyl flooring cannot be fully sanded or resurfaced and may require replacement when damaged or excessively worn. However, cleaning and recoating or refinishing may be possible. Contact us for cleaning and maintenance for all hard surfaces.

What floor finishes do we recommend?

Island Floor Finishing recommends and uses high-quality water-based polyurethane finishes for most timber floor sanding and resurfacing projects. Modern water-based polyurethane finishes provide excellent wear resistance while offering low odour and significantly faster drying times compared with many traditional oil- and solvent-based products.

These qualities make water-based finishes particularly suitable for commercial premises, where minimising disruption to customers and business operations is important. Commercial-grade water-based finishes provide the combination of durability, quick drying and low odour required for these environments.

Owner Matt also has extensive experience working with a wide range of timber floor finishes and can apply the product best suited to your requirements. Depending on the project, this may include water-based polyurethane, penetrating oils, oil-based finishes and conversion varnishes.
